Enhancing Fire Alarm Visibility Across Student Accommodation Properties

Delivering connected fire alarm monitoring solutions for Jesus College, University of Cambridge

Who Are Jesus College, University of Cambridge?

Jesus College, University of Cambridge is one of the constituent colleges of the University of Cambridge, supporting a community of more than 1,000 members including undergraduate and postgraduate students, Fellows, researchers, and staff. The College manages an extensive estate portfolio across Cambridge, including multiple student accommodation properties requiring effective fire safety monitoring and operational oversight.

Overview

Drax Technology partnered with Jesus College to improve fire alarm visibility and student safety across multiple student accommodation buildings. Using AMX and SmartWatch technology, Drax Technology implemented a centralised monitoring solution that enabled the College’s security team to gain real-time visibility of fire alarm conditions and testing activity across remote student houses connected through the College’s existing IT infrastructure. The solution improved operational awareness, strengthened compliance processes, and reduced the risk of alarms going unnoticed within unoccupied properties.

Their Challenge

Jesus College required a reliable and efficient way to monitor fire alarm conditions and weekly testing activity across its student accommodation portfolio. Before the implementation of the AMX and SmartWatch systems, the College had no central visibility of fire alarm events, faults, or testing statuses within the remote houses. This created the potential for alarms or system issues to remain unnoticed for extended periods, particularly when buildings were temporarily unoccupied.

An additional challenge involved upgrading the existing Gent Xenex fire alarm panels with relay interfaces to support integration with the new monitoring platform.

The Solution

Drax Technology designed and implemented a straightforward centralised monitoring solution using AMX and SmartWatch technology. A dedicated AMX monitoring system was installed within the College Security Office to provide real-time reporting of fire and fault events from the remote student accommodation properties.

Each house was fitted with a four-input SmartWatch module connected to the existing Gent Xenex fire alarm panels through upgraded relay interfaces. The College’s existing IT infrastructure was then used to securely transmit alarm event data back to the AMX monitoring platform. The implementation provided operational teams with immediate visibility of fire alarm activity while enabling more effective monitoring of weekly testing procedures across the estate.
